Original buddhism as medicine

Another interpretation of original buddhism.  Nibbana is simply mental and physical health but such health experienced in a philosophically self-conscious way.  Contentment is the overcoming of the duality between immanence and the longing for transcendence. It is the middle way, the path of joy which rides upon the crest of being.  The path of original buddhism is nothing more than the medicine of body scanning and calming (the deep first-person experience of the body) and all that  relates to mindfulness of breathing (anapanasati). The true "jhanas" of buddhism  follow automatically from such practices. The meaning of jhâna became distorted by the later abhidhamma schools and perhaps by the reintroduction of practices proper to outside Shramana schools. Originally jhâna was just an expression of the states of self-conscious freedom, bliss and joy which flow naturally from application of anapanasati and body scanning as well as the philosophically reflected consciousness of health. Jhâna is a synonym for health and life and freedom. We must reject the later analytical division into 4 jhânas.  Since nibbana is the supreme bliss (sukha) is it clear that the higher the jhâna the more blissful it must be.
